Optimization OCD

Optimization OCD is a pattern of obsessive thinking where a person feels a strong urge to choose the most efficient, correct, or optimal option in everyday situations. This may involve finding the fastest route, the best method, the perfect order, or the most logical decision.

If the person cannot determine the “best” option, they may experience significant discomfort, tension, or anxiety, and feel unable to proceed until the decision feels exactly right. This often leads to excessive comparing, researching, calculating, or mentally reviewing possibilities.

In many cases, the person becomes stuck in overthinking to the point of analysis paralysis, where making any decision feels wrong unless it is fully optimized.

This pattern is commonly related to Just-Right OCD perfectionism, and mental compulsions such as rumination, checking, and trying to figure things out with certainty. The more the person tries to reach the perfect choice, the more doubt appears, keeping the cycle going.

Treatment usually includes ERP and ACT and focuses on learning to accept imperfection, uncertainty, and inefficiency, while resisting the urge to keep optimizing.
